Fate had never been kind to Ji Ning. Wracked by illnesses and infirm his entire life on Earth, Ji Ning knew early on that he would die as a teenager. What he didn’t know was that there really was such a thing as life after death and that the multiverse was a far larger place than he thought.

A lucky twist of fate meant that Ji Ning was reborn into a world of Immortals and monsters, of Ki Refiners and powerful Fiendgods, a world where Dynasties lasted for millions of years. A world which is both greater… and yet also smaller… than he ever could imagine. He would have the opportunity to join them, and in this life, Ji Ning swore to himself, he would never let himself be weak again! The Era he was born into was a Desolate one, but Ji Ning would make it his era.

Desolate Era is a xianxia that is heavily inspired by eastern mythology and celestial cultivation system. Many popular figures from Chinese mythology pops up such as the monkey king, nuwa, pangu, huyi and the cultivation method and levels incorporate doaist and Taoist concepts in very fun ways! It is a classic because it is a great execution of a martial arts and xianxia novel. it has great world building and a calm and intelligent protagonist. Readers who are not used to reading xianxia often like this less because they are not used to the world building and Saga length. A great read for those familiar to xianxia. DE has a reputation of being a staple must read in the xianxia genre.

Desolate Era was the first xianxia novel I have read and multiple novels later, I still find myself revisiting this novel for the colorful world building and cultivation system inspired by tradition Chinese mythology. While some might prefer a more fast paced story and might offer Martial World as a better novel, I always found a unique appreciation for this novel as a Chinese American. This novel captures the core if Xianxia: “Since I was young, I’ve always loved reading the memoirs of these transcendents, looking at each and every one of them. I’ve even dreamed of flying high in the skies myself, drinking wine with deities, and catching some demons just to have fun with them. Now that I’ve finally stepped on this road, I’d definitely put in all my effort to walk even further. To me, this road contains so much meaning. love it. ” (Written by I eat tomatoes) When I moved on to other works, I found myself yearning for the elements of this story that made it a part of a true saga.

ok! done reading exactly at 12/28/2022 2:20 am I think this is better than MARTIAL WORLD. the earlier chapters got me in the feels the author sure knows how to write a tragic and heartbreaking story. . although the plot became somewhat boring and repetitive during the last few arcs. I still enjoyed Jining's adventure to become the strongest. a good read to kill time. Gundam enjoyers would love this lol 8/10

I agree. Especially as a Chinese person, I greatly appreciated how the author incorporated Chinese mythology into the world building and cultivation system. The cultivation system and logic of this novel is definitely better.

I totally understand why you are feeling. I almost quit there when I read it at first too. He will fail his FIRST Dao merge and it will be scary for a while but it is definitely worth it to continue. His failure of his first doamerge and later set backs because of this is required for him to become so much more op. Seriously. The Pay off is one of the greatest moments in the novel. I don’t want to give away much more but just keep reading. It is a frustrating arc that wil give you a lot of anxiety but will definitely end up being one of the most memorable moments in the novel

When I started reading this I was kinda disappointed because it was different compared to IET's other novels, Mc becoming strong is so slow. But I still enjoyed it 8/10. Although what the sith Lord of chaos said "he could've have been..." didn't finish I'm assuming there's still rank above lord of chaos.

fun ride if u have 3 or 4 days to kill i guess. this is a completely ending spoiler so even if u cliked pasted the warning ill just say that.. he becomes a god of his own.. universe i guess? its much larger than IRL universe and its more like a limited multiverse, its kinda weird. but thats not the point, he ends up just reviving everyone who ever died along his journey to become the universe cultivator god. its the one this i disliked about the story is all the way through resurrection is possible in certain circumstances and MCs motivation the entire time have just been resurrecting people. kinda invalidates all the sacrifices made and kind of sucks IMO. ive never liked cultivation story's that end with MC becoming a literal omniscient God. thought id mention this in case someone really hates that sort of thing because its not really introduced incredibly early and ull waste a few hundred chapters of time if u weren't gonna continue
